No. 02 — The Collective

Nine of us, one front door.

Jimmy's isn't a single artist's studio. It's nine practices sharing a roof on Front Street — printmakers, photographers, sculptors, writers, weavers. The pin on each card is rust-red because the safelight bleeds through everything in here.

Riel
Sculpture · Found wood

Builds with what the river leaves on the bar each spring.

Marcie
Photography · Large format

Develops more than she shoots. Runs the darkroom on Saturdays.

Eli
Printmaking · Risograph

Two colours at a time. Edition of twenty, never more.

Petra
Textiles · Hand-loomed

Wool from a farm in Pelly Crossing, dyed with what grows here.

Joaquín
Writing · Field reports

Editor of the Field Guide. Keeps the kettle going.

Sam
Painting · Egg tempera

Small panels, slow work. Mostly things seen from the front window.

Wren
Ceramics · Cone 10

Mugs for the room, plates for the Saturday potlucks.

Kade
Video · Super 8

Hands the camera around. Most of the reels live on the shelf, unspooled.

Iris
Bookbinding · Coptic stitch

Binds the Field Guide by hand. One hundred and twenty per print run.

No. 03 — The Window

In The Window — a rotating exhibition that faces the street.

Whatever is up on the wall behind the front glass changes every few weeks. You can walk by it at three in the morning in December and it still counts. We treat the window as the first room of the gallery.

No. 04 — A Small Publication

The Jimmy's Field Guide.

Once or twice a year we print a slim book of what the collective has been looking at: photographs, drawings, notes, weather, a recipe or two, the river. It is not a magazine and not a catalogue. It is a Field Guide.

No. 05 — The Building

Before it was ours, it rented VHS tapes.

The room we work in was a video store. The shelves that hold the press now used to hold late-fee notices, action movies, comedies, the same three copies of every Christmas film. Most of the brackets are still on the walls. We left them up.

The front window has been the front window since the Gold Rush. We try to treat it like it knows that.
